On the next day, namely 7th June, Mr. Consul

hitamore interviewed the representative of the Mayor,

pointed out that the "Fatshan" was due to arrive on the

following day and asked that a telephone message be sent

to the Tang Pu requesting that orders be given that

cargo should be discharged and that the ship should not

be interfered with pending a settlement of the trouble.

ar. Chen promised to do his best on these lines.

In addition to this, on June 10th Mr. Whitmore

spoke to Colonel Leung, Counsellor at Military Headquarters

in the presence of Mr. Johnston, local manager of Messrs.

Butterfield and Swire and Colonel Leung promised to

mention the matter to the Chairman and also to get into

personal touch with members of the local Tang Pu.

No final settlement of the dispute has yet been

arrived at, but I am informed by the local manager of

Messrs. Butterfield & Swire that the ship is at present

being allowed to discharge cargo.
